Workshop «Virtual Iwalk at Babi Yar»
Held by: Anna Lenchovska, psychologist
Time: 1.5 hours
IWalk is a unique educational program of Shoah Foundation, which combines visit to the memorial place with witnesses’ evidences in order to understand the events that took place exactly at that place better. Through private evidence from the Shoah Foundation archive, abstract, massive political history transforms into the bunch of individual human fates.
During the workshop participants could learn more details about the actual location of the memorial places and get to know the stories of witnesses. We will analyze the way memory of the place becomes our memory, the way our todays life is a part of the future history.
Babi Yar in Kyiv is a very important place for all the world. Place important for Kyiv, for Ukrainian citizens, for all the humanity. Jews, Roma, mentally ill, Ukrainian patriots, partisans, prisoners of war were murdered there. This terrible crime committed for the first time in such a volume, has become a kind of symbol of the civilians tragedy during the war. Exploring the history of the Babi Yar we can find out about the same events elsewhere in Ukraine and the ways our society constructs the memory of these past crimes. Only now living in young independent Ukraine we can try to put together all the details of the history of Babi Yar and commemorate all the places where these events occurred.
This workshop may interest teachers, education management trainers, informal education trainers and anyone who wants to learn more on this topic.
The program is conducted in cooperation of “Tolerance Space” Education Centre NGO and USC Shoah Foundation.
